Electric Garage Heaters ~ How Do They Work?

JC Whitney - Everything Automotive

The most under utilized space in many of our homes is in our garages. Depending on where you live it could just be because it is just to cold to be in the garage.

The use of an electric garage heater can reclaim this unused area for you.

The infrared/radiant and convection heating elements are the two different types found in electric garage heaters. Below we discuss the two different types so you can better understand the difference.

A heater using the infrared element heats the object or body that is directly in front of the heater. The entire room gets heated by the convection heater. Your first decision will be which type of heater will best suit your needs. If you choose the convection heater you will need to calculate the size of your garage to make sure you get one that will heat your garage completely.

Fn forced convection heaters are available in four different types and below is a description of the four.

Unit Heaters

Unit heaters are commercial grade heaters and are the most commonly used. They have a large fan and motor and are the loudest heaters because they move the most air. The can be mounted froma wall or the ceiling.

Wall Heaters

Used mostly in small to medium sized garages. They are quieter and are mounted from a wall stud.

Ceiling Heaters

These heaters are great if you have no wall space available, but if the ceilings are not finished they can be very inefficient.

Plug In Portable Heaters

Available in either 120 volt or 240 volt models, they come with a 6 foot cord. It is recommended that all objects be kept at least 3 feet away from the heaters and that your garage is wired for 240 volts if you decide to purchase a 240 volt unit.

Thermostats ~ Wall or Built-In Mounted

Heaters are available with either built-in or wall mounted thermostats, some models will offer you a choice of which type thermostat you prefer while other will not.

The built-in types are knobs that are on the outside of the heaters. You turn them to the right to turn the heaters on and set temperatures, you turn them to the left to turn them off and turn down temperatures.

The wall mounted thermostats work the same way the built-in do but are more energy efficient because the offer more accurate temp readings.

These heaters are manufactured to heat these larger areas and keep you and your family warm all winter long in your garage. Electric garage heaters are the way to go when you need to reclaim some under utilized space in your home.
